Seeds: Fenugreek seeds should be soaked for 12-24 hours before planting them. Soak the seeds in a bowl at room temperature which promotes the fast growth of plants. Drain the water before sowing the seeds.

Pots:  There are different types of pots in markets in different shapes. These pots are less expensive made of clay, plastic or stones. You should prefer the pots that are wide and deep.

Soil: Soil you use should slightly acidic to neutral (with pH 6 to 7 pH) mixed with high-quality compost. The soil you use should be well-drained with no lumps or rocks in it.  Methi seeds should be kept in moist, so water can easily drain away from the soil. For making soil well drained you mix the soil with river sand and then can add the organic compost material and manure that improves healthy growth of the plant.

Make sure that you leave enough space between the top of the soil and edge of the pot, which is needed to cover the soil on the top of the seeds.

  • Methi leaves will reach a height about half a meter, 50 to 70 cm.
  • You should sow seeds about ¼ inch deep in the pot.
  • Methi seeds should be planted densely, you can just sprinkle the seeds on the surface of planting bed.
  • Now cover the seed with a thin layer of soil approximately ¼ inch of them to protect it from birds pecking.

  • Methi seeds take 3 to 4 days to germinate after sowing. Sometimes times it takes a week to germinate.
  • Methi leaves take 20 days to harvest after germination, And for Methi seeds it harvesting time is 2 to 4 months.
  • Methi leaves are harvested till the plant starts blooming. Once the plants become sturdy and toughen up for reproduction, they acquire a bitter taste.
  • You can harvest the leaves 3 to 4 times before the plants take to bloom. Cut the leaves till one-third of the leaves from each plant and you can allow rest of the plant to grow. This process improves the branching and increases the flowering and seed pod production.

Harvesting the Methi Leaves

  • First Harvesting: Methi leaves will be ready for 1st harvest within 20 days.
  • Twigs will grow up again within 15 days.
  • You harvest a plant for four times.
  • To harvest seeds, it takes 2 to 3 months. Methi plants grow too thin, long pods initially and they die naturally. Now pods are ready to harvest after the plant dries and turns yellow.
  • Collect the delicate pods, separate the seeds from the pods carefully.

Replanting for Methi Growing in Pots

Many varieties of Methi plants do not regrow after flowering. For a constant supply of Methi leaves, you should plant the seeds for every 2 to 3 weeks at the exact time the current plants will die.
